BACON

Making my first chair was a rite of passage and a journey I still cherish. I was influenced by a brilliant book by Galen Cranz, an architecture professor at Berkeley. From a somatic point of view, we’re basically not supposed to be sitting as humans; we should squat or stand. The only chairs that support good posture are those gaudy Scandinavian kneeling chairs (I have one and they are deeply tacky) and the chaise longue. Historically, my favorite chaise is Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand’s LC4 Chaise. Because I was using bent ply instead of their spring system (which lets the body find its natural curvature), I had to contour the ply so that it would match the lumbar and thoracic curvature of my own back. Given those curves, I wanted the base to evoke the same sensuality.
